The initial phase of the realisation of Versailles might be regarded as the building of the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte, which is located southeast of Paris close to Melun. The group that Nicolas Fouquet, his superintendent of finances, had assembled, comprising the garden designer André Le Nôtre, painter Charles Le Brun, and architect Louis Le Vau, was fully reassembled under Louis XIV.
